| I was reading over the bouncing bear website and saw that datura had psychoactive properties. I grew it this past growing season and had 3 huge plants producing more seeds than I could ever use. Is it the seeds that you would use, roots, leaves, flowers??? I'd just like to know for next year. Thanks. |

http://www.erowid.org/plants/datura/datura.shtml This is supposedly a very dangerous plant to mess around with. It's easily lethal and apparently the experience isn't very pleasant at all. A good portion of those articles you read about people ingesting "hallucinogenic tea" and ending up in the hospital have been from Datura overdose. From the PDR for Herbal Medicines: "Lethal dosages (for adults starting at 100 mg atropine, depending upon atropine content, 15-100 g of the leaf drug, 15-20 g of the seed drug, considerably less for children) carry with them the danger of asphyxiation." This seems to leave a fairly large margin of error open. 15-100 grams of leaf is a pretty big difference on what could be an LD50. Be careful man. These are a couple articles on Datura overdose: http://shaman.lycaeum.org/~crzkieri/datpoison.html I would recommend not messing with it. There are far safer alternatives out there. My $0.02 |

| This is, in fact, a Very dangerous plant to mess with. An overdose can take weeks to subside. Not fun. IMO, it is more of a deleriant than anything else. Beautiful flowers, though. |

| Exactly what I thought after reading up on it over at other sites as well. Nothing but bad reports and warnings to stay away from it. However, it is an interesting plant to grow and has magnificent flowers that continually bloom and fall off daily. |

| I remember seeing this thing on TV about 5 years ago (Real TV maybe?) where 2 teenage guys had done some Datura. Somehow they got picked up by the cops and taken to the station where they filmed them. They were completely in a different world. I once dropped the good ole' 25 when I was taking a tricyclic antidepressant (pretty sure thats the kind I was on at the time) well let me tell you... I was in a completely different world for quite a few hours myself. This was after I saw that film of the kids, and looking back on it, I was pretty much doing the same stuff these guys were. Luckily I was around some people who were able to give me some tranqs or something, I was in a schitzophrenic state for sure. I think thats what high doses of datura does. |

| I've taken decoctions of Brugmansia (tree datura) several times, I think most recently 10 years ago, and it is heavy duty. I only ever used three small (1-2" length) leaves crushed up in water, in the style of a mint julep I guess, and I would never do any more than that. I used the leaves because they have the lowest average concentration of the alkaloids based on my reading of the Botany and Chemistry of Hallucinogens. I used it after doing a lot of research, and I decided to start out well on the low side and that was plenty. The taste is foul, and you will grow to dislike anything you try to mix it with to disguise the taste. Anyone saying that this is not a hallucinogen has clearly never done it and is playing with semantics. Under the influence of this plant you will experience things that are not real and you will experience them as real. To my mind, that is the definition of a hallucination. In the popular taxonomy, anything identified as a hallucinogen does not actually cause hallucinations; so how does that make any sense? I had some very strange experiences- conversations with people who weren't there, getting lost in a dark room, sudden falling syndrome, repeatedly dropping imaginary objects, reading books with my eyes closed, being unable to determine if my eyes were open or closed because so much was going on either way. Your eyes are messed up for a couple of days afterward, completely unable to focus. This is a plant to treat with a lot of respect and to be extremely careful with your dosage. Just about anything else is safer and milder. |

| I still say its more of a deleriant than a hallucinogen. it will cause hallucinations, unintelligent random hallucinations. point is there is virtually no recall on datura, therefore it is of very little value, as a hallucinogen. i guess, yeah it is a matter of semantics. has anyone seen that Overdose on VHS up for trade? I personally know at least three people (all ignorant) who have managed to nearly do themselves in with the seeds of this species, so... I think it is best to stay far away from this plant. i would never ingest it... again. |

| I wouldn't recommend doing it. Period. If you MUST then take a VERY low dose...but it's not a 'trip' in the true sense. It's more like a potion to induce waking dreams. It screws up your eyesight for a while..among other physical symptoms. I did it once, after I noticed a Devils Trumpet on someone's lawn while walking my dog. I made a weak tea (a few leaves) and smoked some leaves as well. My "trip" was horrible. I had the most severe cotton mouth, I thought I was going to choke. I kept nodding out and in the time it took for my head to fall forward, I would have these epic dreams that seemed to last centuries. I had no context to relate to other people. I must have been on the border. One more leaf and I would probably have been "dreaming awake". None of the cool-seeming parts were pleasurable in the slightest way. I understand your curiosity, but I would say DON'T DO IT <waves hand like Obi Wan> "these are not the drugs you are looking for" |

| Didn't someone post a thread in the Social forum about someone who took Datura and cut off both their tongue and penis?
I have not read ONE account that has made me even remotely curious about trying this under any circumstances other than a padded cell and straight jacket. Even then, I would think twice... (although I have to admit, there is a morbid part of me that MIGHT try it under those conditions...) j |

| Yeah I would second the fact that it is a bad idea. All the
experiences I had ever read on Erowid resulted in being arrested,
hospitalization, or near-death. I recall one where a boy ingested some seeds. The boy ended up running through the forest while some demon was chasing him until he came to a highway that he just walked onto as if it was safe. At that point, luckily, he was arrested and not killed.

| There have been a lot of cases of datura overdose in my area. It happens every summer. Most of em end up in the hospital with severe delusions and hallucinations.

| A boy from Germany cut of his penis with a pair of garden shears a month ago under the influence of angels trumpet tea. If anything, smoke these plants it is easier to control, but should never be recommended. |

| Ok well that confirms that I am never doing that.......

| "I still say its more of a deleriant than a hallucinogen" Datura is most definitely a hallucinogen, as it does make you hallucinate. I think your confusing the word hallucinogen with the word psychedelic, which datura wouldn't be considered. |

| okay,then. i'll agree with that. |

| I have extensive experience with datura and yes it can be dangerous the worst symptom i have seen is vomiting. You definitely develop a tolerance. Well I would not call it a tolerance but more of an awareness wile under the effects. The most I have done is 400 seeds and that was VERY scary. That was the second time my stupid buddy and I thought they were Morning glory seeds at first, this was when I was young and stupid. The hardest part about tripping on datura is dosage. I found that the dosages were not very consistent which sucks. Last time i did em I was just rite, one friend was just gone and the other felt no effects. I would say that dosage is the danger of the plant. |

| Oh yeah and with most of my experiences I was really hallucinating, not like wow that tree is melting, but that tree is melting as in I thought the tree was melting and this was a perfectly normal thing to be seeing. |

| Well the best way to dose it I would think would be to grind all the seeds up to make the active chems pretty evenly spread around, and use something like a tablespoon or something and work your way up. I don't recommend any large amounts of datura, just small amounts before bedtime will give you an idea of what datura may be like. After 10 seeds I had a dream where I went up to a datura plant and touched and then started to walk away and a vine from it wrapped around my leg and dragged me back to it, I woke up really startled, afraid to go back into my dreams, so I got on a black horse to keep my safely away from the datura plant...yes it sounds really weird and I assure you that it was. |
